MIL-PRF-46756E(AT)
3.4.10 Landing gear and leveling jacks. The landing gear, when supporting the front part
of the semitrailer while the rear part of the vehicle is resting on the suspension, shall withstand
without damage the strains imposed when coupling and uncoupling the semitrailer to and from the
towing vehicle. Landing gear and leveling jacks shall be capable of supporting the semitrailer and
the evenly distributed payload and they shall operate freely when the semitrailer is lifted and
lowered. Swing-up type landing gear shall be freely rotatable into the horizontal position during
aircraft loading and unloading, when specified (see 4.6.11).
3.4.11 Seals. When fording or operating in mud, sand, or snow, the seals shall be capable
of preventing the entrance of foreign matter into the bearings, which are exposed to
contamination during these operations. All bearing seals shall restrict the leaking of lubricants
from bearings (see 4.6.12).
3.4.12 Safety. The trailer shall comply with all Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations
(FMCSR) and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) requirements applicable to this
vehicle at the time of manufacture. The semitrailer shall be free of sharp projections or edges that
may cause the operator or maintainer injury. All rotating or moving parts, hot surfaces,
electrically energized or high pressure components, or other inherently hazardous items shall be
effectively guarded or insulated to protect operating and maintenance personnel.
3.5 Performance. Each semitrailer shall meet performance requirements specified herein
with basic vehicle equipment as depicted on the drawings and serviced with products listed in
table V. Semitrailer shall transport actual rated payload or simulated load of equal weight and
distribution when towed by a truck tractor, 5 ton, 6x6, M52 (see 4.6.13).
3.5.1 Turning ability. The loaded semitrailer coupled to the towing vehicle or dolly shall
make right and left turns within its minimum turning circle. The semitrailer shall assume an angle
of 90 degrees to the towing vehicle without damage to the loaded semitrailer and towing vehicle,
and without interference between the semitrailer and the towing vehicle (see 4.6.14).
3.5.2 Service brakes. The service brakes of the loaded semitrailer and towing vehicle
shall control, decelerate, and stop the combination with the rated payload within 30 feet from a
speed of 20 mph on dry, hard, relatively level and smooth surface road. Hydraulic fluid and air
leakage shall not be permitted. Application of brakes on all wheels of the semitrailer and towing
vehicle shall be simultaneous (see 4.6.15).
3.5.2.1 Automatic actuation. The automatic brake-actuation device of the semitrailer
shall automatically actuate the service brakes to stop and hold the semitrailer upon breakaway
from the towing vehicle. The service brakes shall then hold the loaded semitrailer stationary when
on grades up to and including 20 percent for a period of not less than 15 minutes (see 4.6.15).
