3.9.11 Fuel pump. A fuel pump shall be furnished on the engine. Gravity or syphon feed, as prohibited by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation 393.65(d), shall not be furnished. The fuel system shall conform to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation 393.65. When lifting fuel
against a head of 4 feet, the pump shall have sufficient capacity to supply the engine at its maximum rated load. An in-line fuel filter shall be provided, either as a component of the fuel pump or between the fuel pump and the engine.
3.9.12 Governor. A variable-speed governor shall be furnished. The governor shall automatically control the engine speed at the selected rated speed at all fluid pressures and flows required. A manually-operated hand throttle shall control the engine at all speeds from the manufacturer's recommended minimum governed speed up to the maximum operating speed.
3.9.13 Engine fuel tank. An engine fuel tank conforming to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation 393.67 shall be furnished. The fuel tank shall have a capacity to provide fuel for at least 4 hours of full-load operation. The fuel tank cap shall be painted red and shall be attached to the tank by means of a corrosion-resistant chain or cable. A sump suitable for the collection and accumulation of water shall be provided in the fuel tank. A drain shall be located at the bottom of the sump for complete drainage of the fuel tank. Drainage provisions shall be located to prevent spillage of fuel on any area of the vehicle. The tank filler shall be provided with a protective
screen and a vent. A shut-off valve shall be provided in the fuel line to the engine adjacent to the fuel tank. A photo-etched corrosion-resistant plate shall be furnished and marked denoting the type of fuel to be used and shall be located in a conspicuous location near the filler cap.
* 3.9.14 Exhaust system. An exhaust system shall be furnished with a muffler. The muffler shall have a heat shield. The tail pipe shall be pointed toward the rear and to the ground. The exhaust system on type II trailers shall be furnished with a spark arrester. The spark arrester shall have an 80 percent efficiency rating when rated in accordance with SAE J350.
3.9.15 Equipment cabinet. An equipment cabinet shall be provided at the front of the trailer to house the plumbing system, pump and engine. The engine and exhaust system shall be isolated from the pump and the plumbing system by an insulated partition. The fuel tank filler pipe shall extend to the exterior of the equipment cabinet. The exhaust pipe inside the equipment cabinet shall be wrapped with fireproof non-asbestos insulation. Adequate ventilation shall be furnished. The equipment cabinet shall be of not less than 16 gage (0.0598 inch) stainless steel for type I and
16 gage sheet steel for type II, both reinforced double panel construction. Doors shall be vertically mounted and shall be weatherproof. The doors shall have continuous rod or hem type, heavy duty hinges, with stainless steel hinge pins or sockets. Latches shall have recessed handles.
