3.5.4 Braking ability.
3.5.4.1 Service brakes. The combined service brakes of the trailer and towing vehicle shall control, decelerate, and stop the vehicle combination within 30 feet from a speed of
20 mph on dry, hard, level, smooth surface roads
when loaded with highway payload.
3.5.4.1.1 Service brake system. The service brake system of the Trailer, Low Bed, M529 shall, with the air reservoir charged with air to
100 pounds per square inch (psi) plus or minus
5 psi and the air supply line disconnected, fulfill the following requirements:
(a) Brakes on all wheels of the trailer shall be
applied.
(b) No hydraulic fluid leakage shall be evident.
(c) The rate of drop in air pressure shall be not less than one-half (1/2) psi per minute or more than 5 psi per minute with the
brakes fully applied or fully released.
3.5.4.1.2 Automatic actuation. All vehicles shall be equipped with an automatically actuated device to apply the vehicle brakes upon breakaway from the towing vehicle, and to maintain application of brakes for not less than 15 minutes.
3.5.4.2 Parking brake. The parking (hand) brakes shall hold the vehicle on a dry, hard- surfaced 15 percent grade when uncoupled from towing vehicle and headed up or down incline.
3.5.5 Bed-leveling system. On the trailer low bed M529 the hand operated hydraulic system shall compress the entire suspension system so that the top of the "T" track at all points on ready
mount rack measures 37½ inches, plus or minus
1 inch, above the ground while resting on
level surface.
3.5.6 Bumper. On the trailer low bed M529 the bumper cylinder, shall take up the weight of the bumper in a smooth and constant movement without binding or dragging.
3.5.7 Fording. Each vehicle shall ford hard- bottomed, salt or fresh water crossing of depths great enough to completely submerge the chassis, and shall withstand such immersion for periods up to 15 minutes duration without damage to the vehicle or its components. In fording the trailer, low bed, M529, an appropriate approved fording kit for the engine generator set shall be used.
3.5.8 Extreme climatic operation. Each vehicle shall operate under any condition of inclement weather at an ambient temperatures ranging from minus 65° F. up to plus 115° F. and shall withstand, at the extreme conditions of weather and temperatures specified, protracted storage periods without indication of deterioration.
3.5.9 Reliability. Each vehicle shall be capable of operating at least 2,560 miles in a military environment without failure due to workmanship or materials; and when subjected to military operating conditions specified herein (see 3.5.1 through 3.5.8), shall exhibit flexural stiffness and torsional rigidity to withstand bending and twisting without evidence of failure.
3.6 Treatment and painting. Treatment and painting shall be in accordance with Standard MIL-STD-193. Colors shall conform to appropriate color chips in Standard Fed. Std. No.
595, and shall be as specified by the procuring activity (see 6.2).
3.7 Marking. Registration and other markings shall be in accordance with Standard
MIL-STD-642.
3.8 Name, shipping, and service data plates. Data plates shall be photographic aluminum plate (sensitized). The plates shall have the photosensitive silver compounds inbedded within the oxide layer; and after photographic processing the letter, numbers, and all other characters shall be sealed in the oxide by suitable chemical treatment of the layer. The plates shall have a black background. All caution and warning plates shall have red lettering with a black background.
