3.6 Construction and stresses. Main frame members shall be adequately braced with a sufficient number of crossmembers to insure stability under all specified operating conditions, including mobile loads being applied from the rear end of the semitrailer in the tilt and travel positions. The main frame members shall run the full length of the load space. The rear crossmember shall extend the full width of the semitrailer. When the semitrailer is statically loaded with load distributed as specified in 3.4.1, the maximum fiber stress in any frame member shall be not greater than 50 percent of the frame material yield strength. Under these conditions, the frame deflection shall be not greater than 2 inches. All parts of the frame shall be completely electric-arc welded.
3.6.1 Frame splices. Where frame members are spliced, joints shall be reinforced to fulfill the dynamic and static loading requirements of 3.3 through 3.4.1. Splices shall be designed to avoid stress concentration. Splice welds shall be continuous.
3.6.2 Stress analysis. Shear and moment diagrams with maximum deflection calculations for the semitrailer loaded in accordance with 3.4 shall be performed. The strength of the floor, crossmembers, and outside frame members shall not be included in calculations to compute the main frame maximum fiber stress, but the weight of the floor, crossmembers, and
outside frame members imposed on the main frame shall be included in the total load imposed on the main frame. Stress analysis shall include complete analysis of the gooseneck kickup area.
3.7 Platform. The tilting platform shall have one piece longitudinal members (without splices, butt-welds, or joints) running the full length of the platform and full width crossmembers to insure stability. The tilting platform shall be straight without protrusions or cutouts. If wheel wells are necessary, they shall be covered with safety tread steel plates. The wheel well steel plates shall be installed and secured on the same level as the remainder of the platform. Under
all operating and articulating conditions, there shall be no interference between the tires and frame members, platform or wheel well covers. With the semitrailer on level ground, under all
