Commercial Item Description
This commercial item description covers commercial men’s and women’s bicycles for the style, type, and class specified herein.
Salient characteristics:
Bicycles furnished shall comply with the Consumer Product Safety Commission Safety Standards for Bicycles, Title 16 and shall be labeled and bear instructions in accordance with section 1512.19 and 1512.50 of same.
Classification:
Style A. Men’s central frame (front harp) shall have two or more bars extending from the frame head to the upper portion of the seat mast.
Style B. Women’s central frame (front harp) shall have a double bar, one above the other, extending from the frame head to the crank hanger and the lower portion of the seat mast, a “step through” design.
Type I. Single speed, manufacturer’s standard rear wheel hub assembly, coaster brake, sprocket ratio not less than 2.2 to 1
Type II. Three, speed manufacturer’s standard shifting mechanism and rear hub assembly, front and rear caliper brakes (side or center pull style).
Type III. Ten-speed, manufacturer’s standard shifting mechanism, rear wheel hub and derailleur assembly, front and rear caliper brakes (side or central pull style).
Class I. Wheel size 20 inches
Class II. Wheel size 24 inches
Class III. Wheel size 26 inches
Certification. The contractor shall certify that the product offered meets the salient characteristics of this commercial item description and that the product conforms to the producer’s own drawing, specifications, standards, and quality assurance practices and is the same product offered for sale in the commercial market. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract.
Recovered materials. The manufacturer shall utilize recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable.
Packaging, packing and marking. The bicycles shall be packaged in accordance with normal commercial practice and packed in fiberboard boxes that will assure acceptance by common carrier and provide product protection against loss and damage during multiple shipments, handling and storage. The shipping container shall be in compliance with the National Motor Freight Classification and Uniform Freight Classification. Marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
Note. When ordering, purchaser should select the style, type, and class preferred and color if other than manufacturer’s standard is required.
Example: Required – men’s three-speed 26 inch bicycle.
Order – Style A, type II, class III.
